The one on the left is a three-layered chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream frosting, and the one on the right is a three-layer buttermilk vanilla cake with chocolate frosting (links to the recipes are below). To make the embellishments, she used a cheap cake decorating kit from Walmart.
For those who think these cakes look appetizing, here are the links to the recipes Anne used:

Vanilla Buttercream Frosting (Cooking Classy)
Cake with Pink Embellishments:
Buttermilk Vanilla Cake (Wonky Wonderful)
Creamy Chocolate Frosting (Southern Plate)

The cakes look nice! When I was at home years ago baking layer cakes from scratch and icing them was common. They often taste better when home made. Thinking ahead and getting organized enough to do this at home is getting to be less practised. It is less expensive, going to a super market for a birthday cake costs from ten to thirty dollars. I think I could bake a cake for less than that if I had all the ingredients and pans on hand at home. A person needs a good recipe, thanks for sharing yours. Also it is important to make the cake enough ahead of time to allow for the cake to cool before icing it. In the past the birthday person was always honoured by the production of a lovely cake to share.

Looks good. I wouldn't be able to eat them since I'm a diabetic.

Unfortunately, we weren't able to be there for her birthday, so we didn't get to taste them, but everyone said they were delicious.

If your sister has a Michael's craft store near her, they have Wilton Cake decorating lessons.

I'm the eldest daughter of 9 kids. We have always made our own homemade birthday cakes. For the little kids we always let them decide what kind, shape, or animal they want their cake to be. We have even made icecream cakes 🙂 Definetly a lot cheaper!
