This week, I drove up to Bowling Green, Kentucky, for another segment on WBKO, in partnership with TopCashback (video below). You may remember some of my past money-saving segments on WBKO, on the topics of fall travel and back-to-school shopping.
Does your family do Easter baskets?
Regina
We do Easter reusable containers from Dollar Tree now that our girls are older. We get them candy and personal care products there for their containers too.
[email protected]
Love that idea, Regina! Reusable containers are always great to have, and I love that you add personal care products, as well. Perfect for older kids. How old are your girls?

I like your ideas Regina! Personal care products are a great idea! When I was a child, my mom heralded the arrival of spring by buying all of us a new spring outfit for church:) Did anyone else have that experience? My sisters and I found that very exciting to get that with new shoes. It was one time of the year that we all had something new for clothes at the same time. I don't do baskets anymore, but I loved hiding easter chocolate eggs in the house for the kids to find. Now our kids are grown and have their own kids. Our one daughter has 4, and she goes to the dollar store and buys a whole bunch of play things for the kids. Less focus on chocolate – more focus on fun. The kids have a great time with bubbles, sidewalk chalk, skipping ropes, little toys etc and none of it is expensive. And who cares if the items only last a month or so? Eileen

We always got new spring outfits too!

We got our yearly garden seeds. Cheap and useful and kept us busy all summer. We didn't get new Easter clothes unless they were homemade or fixed-up hand-me-downs. We polished our Sunday shoes and removed any scuffs. Vaseline on patent leather and white scuff polish on white shoes. White gloves got washed. We got a new ribbon for our hats if it needed one, or a new elastic chin strap. Hard boiled dyed eggs in our baskets, some jelly beans, and a hollow chocolate bunny. That was it, and we were happy.
My family's thrift wouldn't have been on TV because everyone already knew how to make do like that! Baby boomers' parents grew up in the Depression, when money was even tighter. Baby boomer kids knew how to make their own fun without things from a store. Playing house under a bush with leaves and dandelions for pretend tea party food. Cutting paper dolls from the Sears catalog. Kites made from newspaper, sticks, and string. Bubbles from dish soap, a drop of glycerin, and water in a dish pan. Twist a piece of wire hanger for the wand. What we lacked in money we more than made up for in creativity and imagination!

I am a baby boomer. I take pride in the fact that my family members and I were immigrants to Canada and made a very good life for ourselves through hard work, perseverance, courage and education and knowledge of five languages. You take pride in thrift. Good for you. Now on to other matters; Regina, I shared with my daughters and daughter in law the idea of personal care products for older girls for Easter baskets: they all loved it!! Such a great tip! Thanks. Eileen

Is there something else you want to tell us? Any news??

Ellie looks like she has a bunny in the basket!

You guys are so noisy. She is not pregnant. So leave her alone.

Unless you are a member of Ellie's family or a personal friend, how would you know if she was pregnant or not? That was a rude comment for a poster that obviously was excited if Ellie was expecting. No harm was intended in that sweet post

Ellie, you did a great job! We don't do Easter baskets, no kiddies at home anymore. Ellie and Mr. Handsome hope you have a Happy Easter!!! Jane

Thanks, Jane! Happy Easter to you, as well!

That was a really cute segment. I don't do an Easter basket for my toddler quite yet, but once she'd old enough I will use some of your tips! Thanks!

Thanks! How fun to have a toddler. 🙂

She's a blast! 🙂

Super cute! I like your haircut! I wish the basket wasn’t sitting right in front of you though…it was distracting!
Anonymous
I believe there's a reason why there's a basket in front of her and why she is glowing ??? Just a hunch. Lol Jane
Anonymous
I've suspected something for awhile. But playing bubble soccer the other day…?
If anything, those baskets should have been unwrapped. You couldn't see what was in them, which was the point of the segment. A cameraman or producer should have pointed that out, unless the baskets were positioned there on purpose, to hide her midsection.
Anonymous
She definitely looks pregnant to me! I've had a feeling for a while.
Unknown
I was thinking the same thing!!! And have been suspecting there will soon be happy news to announce!
Anonymous
I thought the same thing Jane:-)
Anonymous
The reason why the baskets aren't unwrapped it's she you can she what it looks liked wrapoed.
Anonymous
I think it is just the picture at the top. I don’t think Ellie looked pregnant on the video.
[email protected]
I'm not pregnant, but I appreciate the well-meaning comments. The camera man placed the basket.

Where do you get green paper to shred? Paper doesn't grow on trees (ha ha). By the time you bought a pack of colored paper, you could have bought some Easter grass. Sometimes your thrifty TV tips aren't all that thrifty. Have you ever really had to scrimp?
[email protected]
Lol, most parents with young kids would have some type of green construction paper on hand. Using paper is also better for the environment than fake plastic grass. 🙂
Ellie

You don't have to buy plastic grass. There's paper grass, already shredded. I got a bag at a craft store this week for under a dollar. It comes in lots of colors.
Anonymous
Not everyone who makes baskets has young children or green paper around the house. Fake plastic grass would have little impact on the environment or the budget if you used it year after year. My mom did that.

Thank You for the tips. We are adults but do baskets. We put a few books in the baskets. We also have some Easter candy.
HAPPY EASTER

Joan, Marion and Marilyn, you all always leave such nice comments. I don't know if you are related but I appreciate you all.

My only child in in her 30s now, and doesn’t have children, so it’s been quite a while since I’ve put an Easter basket together, but I used to love doing them.
I really liked making something to put in them, one year I made a little doll with a couple changes of clothes, cloth diapers with Velcro, and a little blanket. I set the basket up like a bassinet, and put some candy in it, too. That was probably the best one I did. One year I gave her some spring flower starts, and she made a little box garden with them.
Such fun memories.

Being about 60 now I wonder why young women like highlights? You will naturally get that look when you age! I admire a young womans sleek solid colored hair. That is the glory of youth and naturally easy. There is only so many years a woman will have that look before tell tale gray hairs start popping out of the solid color. Highlights seem like a waste of time and effort and money to spoil a good thing. And it seems like some people just can not say no thanks.
Anonymous
What an odd comment. Many, many people have highlights naturally. Ellie doesn't seem like the type to color her hair.
Anonymous
Highlights look like stripes to me. You can usually tell when they're not natural.
Anonymous
I think Ellie’s hair looks great!
Anonymous
Her hair is colored…
Anonymous
Not such anodd comment because it is made to support young women that they do not have to follow examples, peer pressure, what others do, etc. in fasdhion fads. Young women can just be content. And God created them beautiful!
Beth
Ellie love your hair. Happy Easter Ellie!
I don't do Easter baskets since I have no kids.

I didn't do anything for Easter just sat home and watched the New York Yankees baseball team.

Ellie, just wondering, do you get any hate comments? How do you deal with them?
[email protected]
I do receive negative comments. I read through them quickly and let them go in one ear and out the other. Filling my mind with positive things, like God's word, also helps.
Have a blessed day,
Ellie

Hi there,
Thanks for being a loyal reader! I did some updates over the weekend, but everything should be fine now. To access the blog, just copy and past this link into your web browser: http://www.duggarfamilyblog.com
The website won't work if you type https:// before the url, but it will work if you type http:// before the url. (So make sure your computuer doesn't try to add the 's'.)
The blog should be working on any browser (although I don't recommend Internet Explorer, as it is on its way out and has many bugs.)
Let me know if you continue to have issues,
Ellie

We don't have Easter baskets in the UK, but they sound like a lovely idea! We do often have little Easter trees: a few twigs in a vase decorated with little coloured eggs. Mine are little wooden eggs handpainted with Spring flowers that I have had for many years since my children were little.
