Let’s be honest, sauteed spinach isn’t exactly the most appetizing dish ever, and the flavor is incredibly bland. If you’re like me, anytime you find yourself with a helping of this nasty green vegetable on your plate, you eat it as quickly as you possibly can.
Last week, a friend invited us over for dinner, and sauteed spinach was on the menu. Not wanting to be rude, I gave myself a tiny portion and prepared to gulp it down. But when I tasted the first bite, I was pleasantly surprised. It was delicious! I even went back for seconds.
So how, you ask, does one prepare this miracle spinach? I’ll share the recipe, but don’t blink, or you might miss it. It’s that easy!
Easy & Delicious Sauteed Spinach
Ingredients
- 5 oz raw spinach leaves
- 4 garlic cloves, small
- 1 chicken bouillon I use 1/2 packet of Trader Joe’s chicken broth concentrate instead
- ¼ cup water
Instructions
-
Add ingredients to sauce pan or skillet.
-
Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently.
-
Remove from heat, and enjoy.

"eating it as quickly as you possibly can"!! Now that's funny, but oh so true! What is the texture of the spinach in this recipe? I have a hard time with slimy green veggies of any kind but I love raw spinach.
Thanks for the recipe.

Hi Johnna,
I'm glad you can sympathize with me. LOL. The texture is about the same as any other sautéed spinach, but the taste is so good that it makes up for texture. A couple people commented and mentioned that if you don't cook it until it's wilted, it won't be as slimy. I'm going to try that next time.

I couldn't help laughing over the "eating it as quickly as you possibly can" part — I love spinach, as does my entire family!!! We actually grow tons of it in our 1.5 acres of vegetable garden. 🙂 This recipe sounds delicious, and I can't wait to try it!

Wow! That's a huge garden! Right now we live in a rental property, but someday I dream of having a big garden, too. What else do you grow?

Yes, we are incredibly blessed!!! Our garden definitely varies seasonally, but some of our biggest crops include tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, lettuce, cabbage, beans, corn, melons, cucumbers, and summer & winter squashes, as well as many herbs, and several varieties of berries. Plus our little "orchard" – apples, pears, peaches, plums, apricots, and cherries.

You could substitute the chicken bouillon and water for olive oil- delicious.

That's a good alternative. Thanks, Kell.

Don't cook it so much that it is fully wilted…that's when it gets slimy. You can also put some bacon it it to help with taste.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Looks like a good recipe to try. I do enjoy eating raw spinach in a salad. We occasionally have what we call "make a salad" night and I just cut up a bunch of veggies, cheese, chicken (frozen chicken works well for this) and we throw on the toppings. Each person can make to their own liking. Quick and healthy ( for the most part ). Are you in to making any of those healthy smoothies?

Yum, I love salad bars!
I have tried adding a little bit of spinach to fruit smoothies, but I found that you do taste it if you at too much. I suppose I should look up a recipe. Do you make healthy smoothies?

1/8th cantaloupe
1 cup coconut water
3 handfuls of spinach
Blend together….makes 2 servings. Will Mr. Handsome try it?

One might drive a vegetarian up the wall by putting a meat product into a vegetable dish. Sometimes 'they' look round the table to see what they will be putting on their plate. I never tried this, usually I just add butter or oil and salt.

Spinach is 'dry' and has oxalates naturally, so I eat it less often.

Raw spinach has been such a source of food poisoning that you're smart to saute it first. But don't over-cook it. Just stir it til it has wilted & gotten hot. I'd make a dressing to put on it, not add all that stuff to the pot with it. Trader Joe's has a good onion dressing that would work, too.

I will have to check out that onion dressing at Trader Joe's. Thanks!

Spinach is suppose to be good for you.

Kale is quite a good alternative – a lot of people find it has a more appealing texture. Still chock full of vitamins, iron, and hey, you're still getting your cholorophyl!!!

Would you consider sharing the homemade salad dressing recipe as well? Thanks. 🙂

Sure thing!

Saute garlic in olive oil, add the spinach, salt and pepper and some lime juice. That's it. Don't overcook.
I also put spinach in a smoothie that I got when I googled spinach/blueberry smoothie. The internet is your friend for finding solutions and recipes.

Hi Ellie! I'm a bit late to the party but my mom makes this amazing spinach dish where she sautees spinach with lots of garlic in olive oil, and adds some cornmeal to thicken then serves it with corn tortillas! Hope you're having a great Sunday- love your blog 🙂

I've never had spinach with tortillas, but I have to give it a try. I am blessed to have you as a reader!
