It’s a dreary, rainy day here in Nashville. Last week was absolutely beautiful, with clear skies and highs around 75 degrees every day. Today feels more like late fall, and the leaves seem to be changing color and falling off the trees at a much faster rate than even yesterday.
I thought it would be a good time for a fun discussion question. Do you eat cereal for breakfast? Or perhaps you’re a late-night cereal eater? Or maybe you don’t like cereal at all? If you do, what are your favorites?
Growing up, I was rarely allowed to have sugary cereals, but when we stayed at a hotel with a continental breakfast (which was rare) I would always run straight for the Kellogg’s Fruit Loops. At home, we ate Honey Nut Cheerios, Honey Bunches of Oats, and occasionally Raisin Bran. My mom bought it all from Costco, so we always had plenty. We didn’t eat cereal for breakfast, so it was more of an afternoon or before-bed snack. (If you’re curious what I ate for breakfast every single morning before school, from kindergarten through high school, I’ll write a separate post.)
These days, cereal is sometimes a breakfast food for my kids, but it’s more often a snack (and also a great way for me to sneak in extra calcium when I’m pregnant). To keep things simple and healthy, we all eat Corn Chex. For an extra treat, we mix in a small amount of low-sugar granola.

Growing up, Daddy would only let us have Wheaties, but when we moved in with our Grandmother (Moma became very sick and couldn’t care for us for a couple of yrs), she bought us Captain Crunch. I LOVE Captain Crunch peanut butter occasionally, but I normally eat the berry flavored Cheerios with a pack of oatmeal and wild blueberries thrown in. I love cereal for breakfast.

Ate it growing up. All the sugary stuff. Don’t eat it now. Can’t stomach even the sight of cooked oatmeal, it’s a texture thing. Can’t stand milk on cereal because it gets soggy and turns into that same disgusting texture.

I just had some Honey Nut Cheerios as a snack. Sometimes I eat cereal dry and sometimes with dairy free milk. My toddler likes any flavor of Cheerios. He also likes fruit loops in his Halloween bowl, but won’t eat them. But every morning, they go in a bowl, which I eventually end up eating. My husband likes Raisin Bran. Usually we eat it as a snack, except for my toddler who will eat it it for breakfast.

Growing up we ate CapnCrunch. I loved eating it straight from the box. My mom would also give us Wheaties and Special K but I always sprinkled sugar on mine.
Now I really like Raisin Bran Crunch and Special K with the chocolate pieces .

I grew up eating cereal every single school morning, usually the cheapest kind, because my parents couldn’t afford any of the special kind. But every once in a while, we got the sugary ones too.

We had cereal for breakfast every morning growing! Usually the cheap stuff you can get in bulk and rice crispier with occasional sugary stuff. My mom bought more of the sugary stuff when the younger ones were a little older lol so they were a little more spoiled.
My kids eat protein muffins these days. I’m not a big cereal person any more but my husband likes to buy cereal as an evening before bed snack here and there.
With this pregnancy cereal just hasn’t sounded good, but when I’m not pregnant I’ll indulge here and there!
You should do a post on what you had as kids for breakfast!

Yes, I would like to hear what you grew up eating for breakfast!

My mom bought store brand cereal for breakfast.. rice, oats or flakes. Now I like frosted mini wheat, life and flake cereal with slice bananas. I don’t eat dry cereal, I like milk on mine. I’d like to hear what you ate for breakfast every single morning from kindergarten through high school. May I share something with you. Many years ago I work with a girl who had perfect attendance from kindergarten through high school. Now last year a girl at my church graduate with straight A’s from kindergarten through college. Now she is a elementary school teacher.

I also want to hear what you had for breakfast growing up. I usually had sandwiches for breakfast as a kid. I still do, but not the same bread. Occasionally I do eat cereal for breakfast too, usually Special K. As I live in Finland and grew up in the eighties and nineties I can’t recall that there even was a lot of cereal available in the stores. Cornflakes, rice crispies and frosties I remember but we usually didn’t buy them. Now there’s a vast variety of all sorts of cereals. My kids most often eat sandwiches for breakfast. My husband eats oatmeal or yogurt and granola.

Cold cereal was breakfast most days growing up. I never really liked it and now never eat it like that. It’s either dry as a snack, or granola as a topping with yogourt or ice cream, and sometimes I make it into hot cereal by soaking it in something(coconut milk or juice or just water and honey) overnight and microwaving it for breakfast. Some are baking ingredients, like Rice Krispies or Corn Flakes.
