Since Little Buddy was born (two years ago), I have wanted decorations for his bedroom. You know, cute pictures that make it feel like a young child’s room. When Little Buddy was out of the infant state, I finally decided to do something about the lack of decor.
When I announced a trip to Hobby Lobby, Mr. Handsome’s was horrified. “We can’t decorate our son’s room with decorations from Hobby Lobby!” he exclaimed.
“Why not?” I asked.
“Because I can make him something,” Mr. H replied. “And I don’t love the idea of buying mass-produced art that doesn’t support local artisans.”
I admit that I did go to Hobby Lobby and buy a wooden sign that said, “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made,” just to have something to put on the walls while we waited. And I hung up a couple of Mr. Handsome’s paintings, too. They weren’t very childish, but at least they added a pop of color.
Mr. Handsome got around to building some 3D woodland animals over Christmas. The process took many hours, and his little work station reminded me of Santa’s Workshop. He borrowed a scroll saw and then painted all the little pieces before assembling them. He glued the finished animals onto white plywood and then framed them using wood from an old family barn that was recently demolished.
The decorations are now up on Little Buddy’s walls. Homemade by Mr. Handsome, but they look professional. Our theme is woodland animals.

That is seriously so cute! He could have a little side job:)
Marilyn
Mr. Handsome is very talented. I love them; especially the rabbit.

Oh how precious that a daddy sacrificed all that time to make the decor for his son’s room. Those are just the best! So darling!!! (I wish you could put glass on the front so that it would help preserve it for a long time 🤷🏼♀️) If they could last I wonder if Buddy wouldn’t keep them for keepsakes!! Thanks for letting us see them Mr H and Ellie.

This post brought back some wonderful memories for me. My husband who is now deceased was an architect and very talented at so many things. I remember him staying up almost all night helping my son build an elaborate bridge out of popsicle sticks for a class project. He also made a beautiful wooden dollhouse for our daughter which she still cherishes to this day. He was always doing things like that for his family. The animals your husband made are absolutely charming and one of a kind, and lovingly made. I love to decorate, are you planning any other decor for your son’s room to tie everything together, like with rugs or bedding?
Ellie
Those are lovely memories to cherish! It sounds like your husband was a wonderful man. Bedding is a great idea. We still use a crib and blanket with no sheets, but it won’t belong before we need bedding. We have carpet, so no rugs. I hope to have Mr. H build a shelf for stuffed animals and maybe a toy box.

I don’t think I’d leave something in a kid’s room that says “fearfully.” Kids have vivid imaginations. I remember being scared because of that silly bedtime prayer that told me I might die before I wake.
Betsy
That is a valid point. However, in the context of the verse (Psalm 139:14) it’s talking about awe. God has made each one of us in a wonderful and awe-inspiring way. Parents can explain to their child the difference of this versus actual fear.

@Betsy This is a 2 year old’s room. I find that it’s best not to go into detailed explanations with really small children, just keep it simple and not scare them with thoughts bigger than they are. My mom hung a Jesus picture in my room when I was little and I thought it was scary, but I didn’t know how to tell her that. It wasn’t even a nice Jesus picture, it was that old-fashioned sepia-toned one of just his head. No lambs, no little kids at his robes, nothing kid-friendly about it, just long hair that made him look odd compared to everyone else I knew. Some things simply aren’t appropriate for little ones, no matter how well-meaning the parent is. I’d stick with cute animals at age 2 and if he wants Bible quotes on the wall later, so be it. Sunday schools don’t even go into the meaning of Psalms at that age.
Kari
Since she was 2 my little girl tells everyone she meets that she is fearfully and wonderfully made and that God has big plans for her. I don’t think it has to be scary at all.
Ellie
That’s adorable!
Beth
They are very cute. MR.Handsome did a wonderful job. Little Buddy when he gets older he will tell all his friends that his daddy made them.
Sarah
He could make these and sell them as a set on Etsy for a good amount. SO cute! Also, they’d be cute for kids to look at as they were getting their teeth cleaned! 🙂

Those are so cute and I think it’s extra special that your husband made them! Also very cool that the frames came from an old family barn. They are a real treasure for your son.

How cold is your house if you have to wear a faux fur hat indoors?
Ellie
It was an especially cold day, and Mr. H had just come in from outside, so I think he forgot to take his hat off. 🙂
