A few days later, I set out to make a healthier, homemade version of this product that would have my husband drooling. After scouring the internet and taking bits and pieces from various recipes, I came up with this one. It takes about five minutes, and it’s sure to make you drool (if you like queso, that is).
After one bite, Mr. Handsome was sold. He said it was the best queso dip he has ever tasted and that it knocks Tostitos® out of the park.
Restaurant-Style Queso Blanco Dip
Ingredients
- 1/2 lb white American cheese*
- 1/4 cup cold water
- 1/3 cup whole milk
Instructions
-
Cut cheese into bite-sized chunks, and put in a microwave safe bowl.
-
Add water and milk, and stir. Microwave for one minute, and then remove and stir.
-
Continue microwaving (stirring every minute) until cheese reaches desired consistency (approximately 4-6 minutes).
-
Serve as a dip with tortilla chips or drizzled over Mexican dishes.
Recipe Notes
Dip can be refrigerated and reheated, but be careful not to burn it.
*I used Land O’ Lakes, but it contains a few artificial ingredients (still much better than Tostitos queso dips), so I am on the lookout for an alternative.

Wow! So simple there is not reason not to use homemade :0)

Can't it be made with Skim milk instead of whole milk.

Hi Beth,
I have thought about making it with skim milk instead of whole but haven't gotten around to it. I'd say go ahead and give it a try. Let me know how it turns out. 🙂

This sounds good! I'll bet it's way better than the jarred. I have a Texas Queso recipe that's wonderful, too. 🙂

Are there really only three ingredients? I don't know anything about queso, but it seems maybe there should be some spices??

I make it with only three ingredients, but you can always experiment with spices. Chunks of hot pepper might make a tasty addition.
Blessings,

Hi:) can I use another cheese or does it have to be American? 🙂

Hi Raquelle,
I have heard of people using Monterey Jack, and I hope to try that soon. If you do, let me know how it turns out.
Blessings,

Nope, I didn't use any spices. Just cheese, water, and milk. 🙂

Ellie, check the Mexican food section of stores, you will find some regular and some with jalapeños really easy to make that tastes just like restaurant one. Not sure how healthy though

It's so fun to hear from newlyweds as they discover new things about each other. I really appreciate how you cringed, but didn't scold your husband about his unhealthy snack. Then, most inspiring is how you set out to make a healthier version and succeeded!! Good for you! God bless you as you encourage through this blog!

I've made this for years for my family. We prefer a little spice to ours, so i use 3 pepper cheese from the deli. I cook chicken and shred it. I put chips, chicken, then cover with cheese sauce. Chicken Cheese Nachos! 🙂

Would be even healthier if you heated it on the stove instead of the microwave, Ellie.

My Dad loves dips so I'll be sure to try it . Thanks a lot!

I've tried this adding jalepeona juice from a jar and it was pretty good, not too hot. Has anyone put chili powder in it. I cooked mine on the stove, probably easier than the micro wave. It's a great topping for Trader Joe's chicken burittos.

Hi big jer,
I haven't tried adding chili powder, but I would be curious to hear how it tastes. Just be sure to add it slowly so you can control the taste. 🙂

I am thinking of using it as my cheese in macaroni and cheese.
