Have you ever tried wassail? It’s a hot, apple-based drink usually served around Christmastime. The picture above is my in-laws’ dinning room table set for Christmas dinner, with teacups about to be filled with wassail. In my opinion, wassail is great at any time of year (especially the dreary days of February).
This recipe is simple, but oh so delicious! You can make it in a crock pot (or any type of slow cooker) or on the stove.
Hot Wassail
Ingredients
- 1 gallon apple cider
- 2 cups orange juice
- 2 Tbsp cinnamon
- 1 Tbsp allspice
Instructions
Slow Cooker Instructions
-
Combine ingredients in slow cooker, and stir.
-
Cook until hot (approximately 2 hours on high or 4 hours on low), stirring every 30 minutes. You may need to adjust the time depending on the strength of your slow cooker.
-
Ladle into mugs or teacups, and serve hot.
Stove Top Instructions
-
Combine all ingredients in a large stockpot, and stir.
-
Bring to a boil, and turn heat down to a simmer. Cover, and cook 20-30 minutes.
-
Ladle into mugs or teacups, and serve hot.
Recipe Notes
Some people leave their wassail in the slow cooker all day on the lowest setting. (It makes your house smell wonderful if you do.) If you choose to do that, be sure to keep an eye on it, and stir it every 30 minutes.

Looks yummy! With left over whole cranberries I boiled them and sugar in water, strained them and drank the juice hot. It was good. I thought adding some spice would be nice. Sometimes I try to quit coffee and black tea and I do these things instead. Actually I find them refreshing and I feel like I got some health benefits too.

That would be tasty, and cranberries are supposedly very healthy. I would imagine that using cranberries in the wassail recipe would be amazing. Let me know if you experiment. 🙂

What ingredients do you put in your wassail, Alice?

Apple cider and orange juice, like you use, and then for spices cinnamon, cloves, a teensy bit ginger, and a teensy bit of nutmeg. 🙂

I didn't even see that. Lol. That's our Christmas card. It just happened to be sitting on the counter where the wassail was sitting. Good eye!

That sounds delicious and very seasonal! In the UK, cider is alcoholic…is it different in the US?

There are both kinds in the US. This looks like it could have some added if you wanted.

Such a pretty dining room table and place settings,so nice! I'd like the hot drink but without oj in it as that is too acidic for me.

I am going to comment on the the post about the books you are reading on this blog post instead. Lol. I was wondering if you ever heard or read Janette Oke books? I love them!! And thought you may too… I'm reading the Canadian West novel series which is great and is also, where they get the TV show "When Calls the Heart". Which is my favorite TV show too! 😀 Thanks for the lovely posts and pictures!
