Have you ever tried a turkey burger? If you have, keep reading for a delicious, easy recipe that you’re sure to love. If you haven’t, keep reading to discover a tasty alternative to regular ole burgers.
You may be thinking that there’s no way turkey burgers can be nearly as tasty as beef burgers. I completely understand where you’re coming from, but I encourage you to take a risk and try the recipe. My husband had the same thought, but these delicious, simple turkey burgers changed his mind.
Turkey Burgers
Ingredients
- 1 pound 93% lean ground turkey
- 1/4 cup homemade BBQ sauce
- 4 Tbsp minced onion
- burger buns or bread
Instructions
-
Combine ground beef, BBQ sauce, and onion.
-
Form into patties. (I make 3 thick patties, but feel free to make them thinner.) Grill patties on George Foreman or fry pan. (The literature says that ground turkey should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165F, but I usually just cut into it to determine if it's done.) Remove from heat, place on a bun or bread, add condiments.

YUMMY! I have been wanting a really good turkey burger (the few I have tried have not been good) and this recipe looks great. We use turkey bacon, pepperoni, and sausage but have not had much luck with ground turkey. Can't wait to try this recipe!

Jennie O is the best brand for ground turkey!

Hope you enjoy the recipe, Betty! I also use ground turkey for stuffed peppers, and it works great.

I like ground turkey,me and family have been eating it for quite a while now. It is also much cheaper than ground beef! I use it for taco recipes, spaghetti, chili, casseroles, bbq meatballs, and many more recipes! Everyone should try it! As with any meat, the seasonings add even more flavor!

I agree, seasonings go a long way. My mom cooked with ground turkey a lot when I was growing up, and I'm trying to incorporate it into our meals. What else do you add to your turkey meatballs?

Just bbq sauce and chopped onion and pepper.

Ellie,
I love turkey burgers. I was skeptical the first time I tried one. Now I am hooked! I can't convince my daughters to eat turkey burgers though.

Hi Regina,
Yeah, another turkey burger skeptic turned fan! I made these burgers for my brother-in-law and didn't tell him they were turkey. He thought they were great. Said they tasted like meatloaf.

Hi Jane,
I highly recommend the BBQ sauce recipe. (I have another one, too, that I need to post.) It's so easy, and definitely tastier than store-bought.

Hi Ellie,
I really like ground turkey. I too use it in a multitude of recipes. Your homemade BBQ sauce sounds delicious. Will give it a try. I am still making your cobbler recipe at the request of the family after making it for July 1st weekend! I have been using a variety of fruit. Everyone loves it! I am sure the BBQ sauce will be the same. Eileen

Glad to hear your family enjoyed the cobbler, Eileen! Hope they enjoy the BBQ sauce, too.

I'm glad you specified using the lean turkey. There is ground chicken and turkey that includes dark meat and is higher in fat. The ground turkey or chicken breast is the leanest, but more expensive.
I've been making turkey burgers for years. We prefer them to hamburgers. I make a mixture that's almost like a meat loaf mixture — meat, egg white, bread crumbs, onion, and then all sorts of seasonings like garlic powder, ground mustard powder, pepper, minced green olives, Mexican seasoning blend, etc. I always grill our burgers. They taste best with tartar sauce or mayo/pickles on them instead of ketchup and mustard, for some reason.
I make small patties from ground chicken, egg, bread crumbs, onion, grated lemon peel, and plenty of dried dill weed. Those are shaped smaller than a burger and pan-fried. We eat them without buns.
Remember, there is no such thing as a "rare" burger if you're using ground poultry. You need an internal temperature of at least 165, sustained in the thickest part of the meat, to kill salmonella. (I shoot for 170 to be sure.) It's best to test with an instant-read thermometer, not go by looks. If you don't have one, it's worth investing in one. You'll use it every time you cook!
I was talking to a veterinarian this week, and we got on the subject of commercial chicken production. He said that you have to handle and cook all raw chicken meat as if it were contaminated with salmonella, because 80% of chickens will have that on them when they go to slaughter.

Looks yummy! I'll have to try this. I've had turkey burgers before and they have always been a little bland. This recipe looks like it has a little kick to it.

When you open a package of ground turkey or ground hamburger, and you are forming the patties to cook, the meat is only going to be as tasty as you flavor it. So add flavor and it won't be bland!
