Many of you know that Mr. Handsome and I have a niece and a nephew. They are the children of one of Mr. Handsome’s sisters, who is due with her third (it’s a boy!) this fall. Another one of his sisters (he has four, but only two are married) is expecting a baby in the next few weeks. She didn’t find out the gender and is keeping her name ideas a secret, so we are all eager for the child to arrive.
A few weeks ago, we threw a baby shower for the sister who is pregnant with her first. The theme was “You Are My Sunshine,” since it will be a summer baby, and the mom-to-be loves the color yellow.
The bright decor made for a very cheery atmosphere.
One of my other sisters-in-law picked wildflowers for centerpieces. To create festive vases, she put the cut flowers in clear plastic cups filled with water and placed them in vases. She then cut lemon slices and arranged them between the insides of the jars and the outsides of the plastic cups, to keep them in place.
We served an assortment of fruit, arranged in a watermelon shaped like a baby carriage. We also had a veggie plate, chicken salad, and mini dessert pies.
For games, I found a baby shower crossword online, and I created a baby shower version of Get to Know the Guests. The first gal to find guests who fit all the criteria won a prize. We also had everyone fill out one or two pages of an ABC book that we are putting together for the baby.

What baby names do u like ?
Ellie
Hmm, that’s a hard question! LOL. I might just end up reading through the baby name dictionary because I want to make sure we consider all our options. It’ll be a hard decision, for sure, and I have found that coming up with boy names is more difficult. That’s what I’m struggling most with.

Did I miss something – are you expecting?! Lynn
Ellie
Hi Lynn,
Nope, you didn’t miss an announcement. 🙂

I think it’s better to wait until the baby has arrived before settling on a name, though I know (and respect) that many others feel differently. I feel like a name is a big deal, and it’s easier to find the right one with a baby in your arms, as opposed to in your belly. I had a few names in mind when I had my daughter, but none of them felt right when she was born. It took a few days for me to settle on one, but the one I gave her was the one she seemed to respond to. Every time I said it, she looked me in the eye, which she didn’t do when I tried the other ones I was considering. I know it probably sounds silly, but I felt like we agreed to her name.
On another subject, I absolutely love the look of lemon slices in a vase. I never would have thought of that, but I’m going to use this idea for a centerpiece when I have out of town guests next week.

Where are the mini desert pies?
Ellie
Great question. A friend made mini berry and lemon pies, using graham cracker crusts and regular pie crusts in silicon muffin pans.

Looks great!!

Ellie, seems like you’ve helped a lot with that kind of stuff for your family that I’m soooo curious to see what they do for you when your time comes! Or whoever does it for you that is :)…I hope you show your baby shower and all things “baby” on here. We’re so excited for you when that time comes!! By, the way, I loved the lemon idea. I did something similar to that for a 50th anniversary once. I think I put some black rocks in the bottom of a straight up and down round vase and then circled the lemons around on top of them and then added forsythia to the vase. Anyway I have always loved the look cut lemons, oranges, and limes do for decoration!
Ellie
Thank you, Candi! I had never thought to use citrus slices for decoration, but I agree that they add a really nice look. I’ll have to use them in the future, for sure!

I think for summer – themed events sunflowers are the best! Also, a lemon cheesecake would be nice.

Thank you! Anne is usually the main planner of the operation, and the rest of us just pitch in to help her make her ideas come to life.
