Mr. Handsome and I have been on a fresh-squeezed orange juice kick. I know it’s traditionally a breakfast drink, but we usually make it after dinner as a substitute for dessert.
I have always considered store-bought orange juice to be hit or miss. Every once in a while, you get a winner, and but you usually get a lemon (which is a real problem, unless you’re in the mood for lemonade…excuse the pun).
Someday when we have more kitchen space (I really dislike clutter), we might invest in one of those fancy electric juicers, but for now, our handheld citrus juicer works just fine. And hey, when you spend 5 minutes making a single serving of juice, that juice is much more satisfying.
I am a firm believer in full-pulp orange juice, and our little $5 juicer seems to agree. The results have been delicious! At first, we used only Valencia oranges (known as juicing oranges), but then we started mixing in some naval oranges, and the already incredible taste improved by leaps and bounds. Do you enjoy fresh-squeezed orange juice?

Never did like OJ. Too sweet. I prefer to add a slice of orange to some plain seltzer water, or mix a tad of OJ into that. Or just eat the orange as is.
Anonymous
Orange juice is not sweet at all if you get the right one.
Anonymous
It's full of "sugar." (fruit kind)
Anonymous
Orange Juice is VERY sweet, too sweet for me too. I can't just sit and swig a glass of OJ, I'd feel like I had a sugar rush.Oh and the acid, not a good combo for my stomach!

How can you afford to buy so many oranges for (so little) juice? I would think the cost per glass would be prohibitive. I just looked up my store's orange prices, and it's 80 cents per navel orange or $5 for a 3-lb. bag. At about 1/4 cup of juice from an orange, if you're lucky, that would be a $3 glass of juice, at least. You must shop somewhere where oranges are much cheaper.

She goes to Aldi's their oranges are cheater then regular stored.
Anonymous
Every state is different in their orange prices.

What do you do when oranges are out of season?
[email protected]
I was able to buy a big bag of Valencia oranges at Walmart for $3. I threw in a few Naval oranges (Aldi currently has them for a good price) and made about 8 cups of orange juice. Some store bought juice might be cheaper, but we do this as a treat/dessert. We don't drink it every day, and when we do, we have small portions. When other fruits are in season this summer, I'm sure we won't do much fresh squeezed orange juice.

We just had fresh squeezed orange juice at my brother's for a family gathering and it was a big hit!
There was soda too but everyone preferred oj🍊

Hope you brush your teeth after drinking that. All that fruit acid on tooth enamel. Ask Mr. H!
Just don't brush your teeth BEFORE you drink the juice. The world's worst flavor combo, toothpaste and orange juice. 😛
SuperJames526
OH MY GOODNESS! THAT MUST TASTE TERRIBLE!
Emma
amen this has happened to me multiple times 🙂
Anonymous
SuperJ, you haven't lived til you've tried that. Go on, I double dog dare you!! Come back with a report on the experience.
Anonymous
There are candies and gums that are flavored "orange mint," yet mint toothpaste and orange juice don't go together at all. I don't get that!
SuperJames526
I'm not willing to try that out; even if you do double dog dare me. There's no need to act like a fool to gain knowledge.

Haha yes, orange juice after brushing teeth is worst! I just wanted add though, I have heard that it is best to wait 30 minutes after drinking orange juice before you brush your teeth. When you brush immediately after eating acidic food the acid actually causes more damage to the enamel. I think it is better to rinse your mouth out after oj and brush later. I'm definitely not an expert or anything though, so do your own research!
By the way, your orange juice looks amazing Ellie! Love fresh-squeezed!
Anonymous
Haha yeah I have made that mistake before… More than once actually. Definitely not a taste I enjoy 😉

I've learned some great lessons in life by doing the silliest things. Toothpaste and orange juice seems like a harmless, fun, silly experiment!
aletterfromhome
It's not the mint in toothpaste that causes the icky flavor when mixed with OJ. There's a chemical in toothpaste that affects your taste buds for about 30 minutes that reacts badly to the orange juice.

Their is no fruit acid in Orange juice. It does hurt your tooth enamel. I drink orange juice and the fruit acid does her my tooth enamel.
Just don't brush your teeth tell after you eat anything otherwise your food will taste gross.

What are you talking about ^ response up there? Citrus fruits certainly do contain citric acid! OJ has a pH level of 3 to 4, putting it well into the acid side of the pH scale. Did you have a typo when you said there is "no" fruit acid in OJ?
Anonymous
Citric acid is good for your cold when your sick.
Google orange juice or Citric Acid it will tell you it's good for you.

I never had fresh squeezed orange juice before.
I buy the Tropicana orange juice no pulp and it only cost me $2.00
That's with coupons
Anonymous
Hello! Can you suggest an orange without pulp? I guess I could throw them in my Margaritaville machine maker but if they had a tool like yours which would keep out pulp, would do it. I'm not much of a cook/kitchen person.
Thanks,
Erin
Emma
put the orange juice through the strainer
Anonymous
Erin don't eat the pulp

The strainer idea sounds like it would work. 🙂

I would try it but I really can't handle the texture of pulp
Anonymous
Just use a small holed strainer or cheese cloth and there will be no pulp.
SuperJames526
After living over 10 years in Ecuador, there's nothing better than fresh squeezed orange juice. It also helps that you have several citrus trees in your Yard.

That sounds delicious! (and healthy!). I hate the taste of store bought orange juice, aside from the fresh orange juice they sell at Trader Joes which tastes more like fresh OJ. I am also curious about the cost, but I'm sure the healthy benefits of such a healthy drink are worth it!
[email protected]
I am able to find decently priced oranges at Aldi and Walmart, and we limit our portions, so the price isn't too bad. It would definitely get expensive if you drink it every day or multiple times a day, but we look at it as more of a treat/dessert.
I haven't tried Trader Joe's orange juice, but I'm sure it would be great! I love Trader Joe's. Do you shop there often?

I don't very often drink orange juice, but when I do it is without pulp, or I strain it. I don't very often drink any fruit juice, I rather eat the fruit. I enjoy hearing what you and Mr. Handsome like to do. Keep the recipes coming. Blessings

Fresh squeezed juice is so good, nothing like the original source and no additives. Do you use the leftover orange for anything in particular? I have a nutri ninja and it has been one of my best investments. They are reasonably priced and the health benefits are exceptional. The bullets also do an excellent job and they are very compact. Something that wouldn't take much space on a counter. Very versatile and fun to experiment with.
[email protected]
I haven't found a good use for the leftover orange, but it does make your garbage smell sweet. Sometimes I'll throw some peel into the bottom of the can to overpower any stench. Lol.
Come to think of it, I do have a Nutri Ninja (the bullet size, not the big Ninja). I use it more for smoothies. What do you make with yours?
Ellie

My Nutri Ninja is also the bullet size, not the full blender. I use mine for smoothies as well. I experiment with different veggies, fruit, juice, flax, etc… I would love to hear recipes/ideas from others who have one. What do you put in your Ninja?
Anonymous
Just an idea for the leftover oranges. What kind of birds do you get in your area? Orioles and cardinals like oranges.
[email protected]
I don't use my Ninja as much as I should, but I love experimenting with different fruits. Here are a couple recipes I have shared:

I'm more of a green juice fan

Ugh, my husband bought one of those high-speed mini blenders, then tried to make something with cucumbers and spinach and tomatoes. It looked like the proverbial frog in a blender when he was done. No thanks! That's what I have teeth for, to chew my food.
Anonymous
Green juice that is gross. I agree green juice it's like eating frogs.
Anonymous
Yes, it's an acquired taste. Try getting one from a fresh juice company, might taste better for your first one then making your own through trial and error

I am from Spain and when I first moved to the USA it shocked me that most of the orange juice here is store bought. I Spain we always squeeze our orange juice in the morning and it is part of every breakfast. It is definitely healthier and you should always leave the pulp, since it keeps the fiber. If you take all the juice out, your sugars will go higher faster. I can't tell by the picture which one you have, but I recommend you to get an electric juice squeezer. It's not expensive and you can find it in walmart.
[email protected]
That would be wonderful! I visited Europe as a child (not Spain, but a few other countries), and the breakfasts were one of the highlights. So were the lunches. Come to think of it, the food in general was just wonderful. How long have you been in the US?

I buy a bag of Orange and use the orange peels to make orange bread and it really good.
Robyn
I Iove fresh squeezed orange juice. Particulary on a hot summers day. Sometimes I'll put ice and fresh orange juice into my nutri bullet and blitz it up. It turns into the most refreshing and healthy slushie.

That sound wonderful! Like an Orange Julius.

Hey Ellie,
You should try this.
We eat this for breakfast (banana and/or yogurt). So traditionally it is breakfast.
Try this for breakfast or as a substitute for dessert.
It is
(Vanilla yogurt, banana and chocolate chips together).

Sounds good!
Debbie
Valencia's are summer fruit. Navels are winter fruit. That is why the navels made better juice in the winter. Juice Valencias in the summer.

Thanks for sharing that, Debbie! Sounds like you're an orange expert. 🙂
