Are you fed-up with your disorganized spice cabinet? Constantly having to pull a out two dozen containers just so you can find the two that your recipe requires can be quite tiresome.
Over the weekend, I decided that something HAD to be done about my awful mess of a spice cabinet. (I really wish I had taken a “before” picture.)
We had a big cardboard box in our recycling bin, so I came up with the idea of making risers. If you like the look of the finished product (picture above), check out my tutorial video:

You were very interesting to listen to, Ellie. I was BLessed to be able to design our kitchen after having gutter damage some years ago that took out the back wall in our kitchen – so I have a lovely spice cabinet. But, I appreciated your ingenuity. I might suggest that you put your spices on each level in alphabetical order and in categories such as black pepper, cayenne pepper, red pepper, white pepper….I find this to be quite helpful. Thanks for giving us the updates on the Bates and Duggars. I can no longer get UP station and miss them and the Duggars.

Hi Carol,
Thank you! It would be fun to be able to completely redesign your kitchen. I would love to have my spices in alphabetical order, but something tells me they wouldn't end up staying that way. 🙂
Blessings,
Ellie

You have quite the southern accent. It's interesting to hear from a Canadian's perspective!

Well thank you! I always used to think that my Canadian accent had left me years ago, but I've recently been told that it's still there.
Blessings,
Ellie

Nice video Ellie. You are doing such a good job of starting your home on a good footing. A great encouragement and blessing for young ladies. I will have to share some of these ideas with my own daughter in a couple of years when she takes the leap into marriage. Blessings to you and Mr. Handsome.

Thank you for your kind words, joogie. I'm blessed to have you as a reader. 🙂

I took it a step further. I got matching clear spice jars at The Container Store, and their expanding plastic risers. I transferred all my spices to the clear jars and then with a label maker, made labels. The spices are on the rack in alphabetical order. I have over 50 jars, so I have to have an order or I'd never find what I was looking for. It's nice having all the jars the same size, and since they don't have the store labels, I can easily see exactly how much is left. Extra spices get stored in the freezer for refilling the jars.

Wow! I'm impressed! I'd say that's quite a few steps further. 😉

Hi Ellie!!
This has nothing to do with the post. I've been reading the Duggar blog for a few years now… and a few years ago you posted on there that the Duggars were going to be at a church in Wisconsin. I went there and saw you guys:) I didn't say hi though. :-/ Are you from Wisconsin?
Anonymous
Hi, I am from Wisconsin also. Would you mind telling which city/church this took place at? Thanks!
[email protected]
I remember that event! We're not from Wisconsin. We were just visiting, and the Duggars happened to be in the area campaigning for Santorum. Im so glad you commented! 🙂

The event was at Calvary Baptist Church in Neenah, WI. 🙂

Ellie you are so beautiful you could have been an actree, but don't let comments like that make you conceited or to run off on your husband!
[email protected]
Well thank you. Even if I were an actress, I would still want to be married to my husband. 🙂

This is rather off-topic, but I've been wondering what types of books you enjoy reading? Do you enjoy classic literature? Christian romance novels? Are you familiar with the author Lynn Austin?
[email protected]
Hi there,
Before going to college, I spent quite a bit of time reading, mostly historical fiction and classical. The past several years have been a whirlwind, so I don't have much time to read anymore. I haven't heard to Lynn Austin. What genre does she write?
Blessings,
Ellie

Lynn Austin writes(mostly) historical Christian fiction…Some of her titles include Hidden Places, Eve's Daughters, Wonderland Creek, and A Proper Pursuit. Her "Refiner's Fire series is excellent! It shares the stories and viewpoints of three young women during the Civil War – one from the South, one from the North, and one a slave.
If you ever read any of her books, I'd love to hear your opinions on them! 🙂
Many blessings to you and Mr. Handsome!!!

Those all sound very interesting! I do hope I have a chance to read them soon. 🙂

#Love
Since I love to read historical fiction, I decided to take the commenter's advice and read The Refiner's Series by Lynn Austin. This series is sooo great!!! I'm on the third book now and can't put it down. Besides the beautifully written stories of the lives of three different ladies, these books share how the love of Jesus can help anyone through the most trying of times, especially when we feel unlovable. They also share how God has a fantastic plan for each and every person, no matter where we come from or how different we are. Thanks for the book recommendation!

Hi Ellie!
I love organizing ideas and that definitely fit the bill! I'm sure I'm not alone in this but it would be wonderful if you could post a video weekly. It could be about anything! Your blog contains wonderful topics and it sure would be neat to see you every week. I know you are a busy young housewife but please think about it. Blessings, Maggie

I love it! The video is great too, very clear. Do you mind telling how you made the video? Do you have a recorder, or a camera that can record? I think my kids would love to do something like this!

Hi Sonya,
For this video, I just used my iPhone to record, although sometimes I use my digital camera.
Thanks for reading!

Thank you – it turned out so well! Great quality!

You seem like the perfect housewife. It feels almost strange, given how young you are. I don't mean it in a bad way, you seem very mature and confident, but I also wish you to keep for a long time the fresh minded attitude and the elasticity that's typical of younger people.
I don't know if I'm expressing myself correctly, as English isn't my first language, I just wish you to stay young in spirit for a long time, even with the responsibilities that come from being a wife and in the future a mother! 😉

You expressed yourself very well. (Your English is wonderful.) Those are wise words that I will keep in mind! Thank you. 🙂

Also, the camera loves you, and I can see that you were very prepared for what you were talking about. Even if it was just a simple house trick it's nice to see someone who puts care into how they do and present things.

Thank you for your kind words. 🙂
